It seems that all regulatory roads lead to infection prevention and control. Infections remain the most important preventable cause of avoidable hospital-related deaths, with billions of Medicare dollars spent each year treating infectious illnesses acquired during the hospital stay. Infections hamper efficient patient flow, and the cadence of novel infections is accelerating. Many hospitals experience shortfalls in reimbursement due to Medicare “HAC” (Hospital Acquired Conditions) and other penalties. The Joint Commission just issued a major rewrite of its Infection Prevention chapter on the heels of CMS's 2020 revision to the hospital Conditions of Participation.
